The Joys of Education!

Last Grammer Post!!!! Woo Hoo!

Where to use a dash

Most commonly, a dash connects an independent clause with another, with a separate or 'interrupting' thought plus a conjunction like or, but, yet, as, for, and after the second dash.

Independent clause — thought — independent clause.

It's pretty simple and if you would like nore info visit:

Yeah...nice to think it through every now and then

First off, this article really opened my eyes. I knew that we were not liked by other countries, but I never thought of it as a problem. It's obvious that the people of America are proud and we defiantly know how to show. I am proud to be an American. It's such a privilege to live in a land with such great people. When I think about what my life would be like somewhere else I get immediate more aware of the great freedoms that have been given to me. I liked this article because it really opened my eyes to what the world thinks of us and how fortunate I am to in America. God Bless America!

To One In Paradise

Thou wast all that to me, love,
For which my soul did pine-
A green isle in the sea, love,
A fountain and a shrine,
All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers,
And all the flowers were mine.

Ah, dream too bright to last!
Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise
But to be overcast!
A voice from out the Future cries,
"On! on!"- but o'er the Past
(Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies
Mute, motionless, aghast!

For, alas! alas! me
The light of Life is o'er!
"No more- no more- no more-"
(Such language holds the solemn sea
To the sands upon the shore)
Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree
Or the stricken eagle soar!

And all my days are trances,
And all my nightly dreams
Are where thy grey eye glances,
And where thy footstep gleams-
In what ethereal dances,
By what eternal streams.

How to properly use a semi-colon...

I always get really confused with how to properly use a comma or a semi colon. So here are so helpful hints..

Most semicolon errors involve the inappropriate use of a comma when, in fact, the
semicolon is needed; this is referred to as a “comma splice.”

Examples:

The exam begins in two hours please be on time.
The exam begins in two hours; please be on time. (independent = semicolon)

Just think it through.....

Noun-verb mismatch
Example:
"A herd of horses are better than a flock of sheep" ("herd" is singular).

"The City feels that this is a bad idea". (A city can't feel).

"This paper will describe..." (Paper can't describe; only people can)

Lay and Lie.....ah it gets me everytime!

It's simple, but I mess it up all the time!

Wrong: I got dizzy and had to lay down.

Right: I got dizzy and had to lie down.

Right: Just lay those books over there.

Hand in Hand

I think that these essay's go hand in hand. When I first started reading I wasn't very interested, but as I kept reading I became interested in the topic and kept reading. I really enjoyed this weeks reading.

Okay....I'm pickin' up what you're puttin down....

Okay this is so confusing for me! But I went and did some research and there is not doubt in my mind in where I should put effect and affect. Here is what I found and hopefully if you have a problem, this will help...

Affect is in the future, and effect is in the past...

Affect usually has a future tense to it.
Example: "The tornado will affect the town."

Effect usually has a past tense to it.
Example: "You can see the tornado's effect on the town."

Affect also has a present tense
Example: "The tornado is affecting the town."

Not a fan!

I really don't like Michael Moore! I think that he just talks to hear himself speak! I feel that he is the idiot in our nation. He's says inappropriate statements and has irrational thoughts! I don't have much to say about him other than the fact that he's annoying. He makes Americans sound like they are idiots. He is extremely negative and he doesn't leave any room for improvement. News flash to him, there are stupid people everywhere, not just in America! It's inevitable, but that small percentage of people don't count for the entire nation. I just don't enjoy his tone and his derogatory statements. Some of his points are credible, but they are few and far between. He's definitely not my favorite person.

Stickin' with the basics!

My friends and I had an argument about the difference between to and too. We argued for a while and then we decided to go to about.com to answer our question it said "the preposition to refers to a place, direction, or position. To is also used before the verb in an infinitive. The adverb too means "also" or "excessively."

Examples:

Meg was too tired to walk home. I was tired, too. We walked to a phone booth and called a cab.

Check out the about.com and type in the difference between to and too, if you have the same problem that we had!

Changing American Families....

When I read the disclaimer saying that it would be wise to read this passage with a bowl of M&M's in the middle of the afternoon, I was a little leery of what was ahead. After a minute of reading I became very fond of the passage and I just kept reading. I found Changing American Families by Judy Aulette very interesting. The writing was very boring, but there were a lot of interesting facts about social status, race ethnicity, and many many more.

The Moynihan reports were released in the 1960's. During that time Americans were experiencing the Civil Rights Movement. For the Moynihan document to be publicized was a very big scare and step for all Americans. During my reading I was a little confused where Daniel Patrick Moyihan, the author, got his information. I felt that Stack had a lot more evidence and force behind her findings because she was involved and she immersed herself in the work. It seems that Moynihan got his information from his personal opinion. He never got into the situations that he was analyzing, but he stood on the side lines and observed from there. There was much discrimination around this time in history and the people were just finding a way to point the finger somewhere else. I think that Moynihan had some good points, but for the most part his evidence and assumption were very wishy-washy. Stack had more evidence and facts with her experiences.

Your and You're

One of my biggest pet peeves is when your and you're are not properly used. It took me a really long time to actually understand it, but now that I know, I'm not going to make that mistake again.

Actual Rule

~You're~ "I don't know what you're talking about." ("I don't know what YOU ARE talking about.")

~Your~ "Your book is on the table."

My sources are legit, and if you want to check it out, do it! I hope this information helped.

Class Transition

This week has been crazy! I wanted to make my post, but I haven't got around to it. This class is going well and I am enjoying myself so far. I had to make a transition between classes, but I am making this post to make sure that I am still able to post on a regular basis. I am now going to be in the English 2010 Thursday night class.

Lets go back to the basics-shall we?

Where should commas be used? That is one of the most common mistakes I use in my writing. I was thinking about this problem I have and I remembered the old, but very helpful tool, FANBOYS. The acronym FANBOYS means that a comma is supposed to be used before: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. It's a very easy acronym to remember and it saves me a lot of grief when writing papers. Technically, it's called a coordinating conjunction when the comma is placed before one of these words.

Actual Rule: When using a conjunction to join two sentences, use a comma before the conjunction.

So that's easy enough. Whenever I see any of the words in FANBOYS I know that it's time to stick a comma in there.

Here's the website if you want to check out where I got my information and the answer to my question.

Back in the day

Looking for work....

This essay was great. Soto did a great job capturing the view of a child. The entire tone of the essay was carefree and easy, when in fact, the family situation was, not so great. While reading I felt like I was there with the kids, looking for work, and doing what kids do. It reminded me of my childhood. I wasn't forced to work by any means, but I have always been a little entrepreneur. I would clean out my toy box and load up my rusty red wagon with treasure that I could hopefully sell to the neighbors. I would go out all day and just talk with neighbors and do my best to sucker them into my treasure, actually it was junk, but in my mind back then they were the best. The entire essay was very literal and didn't involve much critical thinking, however, I took a lot from it and I felt that the author did a great job helping me remember the world through a child's eyes.

I've always wanted to go back to the 1950's....but not anymore.

This essay discussed the 1950's and how much it impacted the rest of the time. (well that was just a little part of the essay) After reading the essay I don't feel at all compelled to go back in time and live in the 1950's. There was too much sexism, discrimination, racism, and the list could go on forever. The way that the family was present was absurd. People in that time strived so much for the perfect image, but in all actuality that can never be obtained. In fact, with that striving for perfection families were segregated with divorce and scandal. This essay was great because it really opened my mind and helped me see that the 1950's weren't all they were cracked up to be. Coontz made it clear that in the 50's the families were not perfect, however, what family is perfect? I think that in all time periods there are and will be problems with keeping the family united. Back in the 50's families struggled with the judging eye of neighbors, and the perfect image that they felt needed to be followed. Now days, the struggle is scandal, divorce, the economy, and many many more problems. When it comes down to the wire, the most important factor to a family is that there is love and respect for one another. In the first essay that we read about looking for a job I realized that even though the family didn't have the best amenities, and they didn't live up to the picture perfect image, they still had each other.

I appreciate both essays and I think they brought some very good prospectives to the table. I realize that all times are hard, but what matters is what you take learn from the trials. The first essay was very literal and quite easy to read, but the second on really opened my mind and made me think more analytically and interpretively. I enjoyed both essays very much.

Being an American....

In reading the introduction of Rereading America I realized how fortunate I am to be an American. Honestly, I've never really thought of how lucky I am. I know that it is a privelage to be an American, but that doesn't make me any more important than others. I like this book, and I feel it has a lot to offer to the reader. I'm excited to read and gain more knowledge of America and the cultural myths.

Class Evaluation

This class is going well and I'm really learning a lot. I have been going to Dixie for a very long time and this is a fun and productive class
